In the age of modern technology web streaming platforms have opened up a vast new avenue for filmmakers.      For instance, 500 hours of material is uploaded on to YouTube every minute – that’s to give one an idea as to how much creative access to the online space has grown. As has always been the case with a visual medium, the fundamentals remain the same. It is only the medium that has expanded, and to cater to this, content creation must be incorporated into film studies.      Within a year of entering India, leading online streaming company Netflix – which is one of the world’s largest producer of films – Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings hoped to generate 100 million users from India, – as much as another contender Amazon Prime in its debut year 2018. These trends are pointers to the rapid shift in the entertainment consumption business emerging out of the digital space. In this universe of the over-the-top (OTT) platform, what breaks new ground is good writing. More than the charisma of the film stars and the dazzle of the computer graphics, it is the boldness of writing that propels cinemas before the public.   Filmmaking involves a number of discrete stages including an initial story, idea, or commission, through screenwriting, casting, shooting, sound recording and pre-production, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a film release and exhibition.

FILMMAKING: GOOD WRITING IN DIGITAL SPACE

The story is still the hero. And the story still continues to rely on the right visuals and emotions. This arrangement is unlikely to change and will continue.

Content is king here also! Earlier 120 minutes of content could be delivered in a feature film format. Now the film world is looking at top-notch technical features – screenplay, direction or cinematography –packaged into 50-minute time slots of stories. This also means greater use of experimental features like sound, themed music and many post-production innovations devised by trained professionals to take the bar higher. Today’s challenge is to drive audiences to it – with the democratic space of digital streaming getting tougher with a deluge of original content.

SCRIPTWRITING / SCREENPLAY: A Screenplay can be an original piece, or based on a true story or previously written piece like a novel, stage play or newspaper article. At its heart, a screenplay is a blueprint for the films it will one day become – final draft or movie outline.

The earlier classic structure of screenplay was – 1) Set-up 2) Conflict 3) Resolution

A Film Producer has to build the movies from ground up.! He has to: –

  • Get a screenplay
  • Get a Director and cast
  • Get the required money
  • Make the movie
  • Market and sell it
